Open Position – Head of Youth & Teen Services

The Waukegan Public Library is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Youth & Teen Services Manager to join our growing team. In this role, you will oversee a staff of 5 full-time and 1 part-time employees in this active department, which is responsible for developing engaging programs for youth, promoting collections through knowledgeable readers’ advisory, delivering top-notch customer service and computer assistance, and participating in school and community outreach events. WPL has recently launched a new strategic plan with action steps that include a youth department remodel, creation of both a Makerspace and a dedicated teen space, website redesign, robust cultural and arts programming, and initiatives to increase school outreach, tween/teen services, and community partnerships that enhance the lives of our diverse community. The ideal candidate will be an emerging library leader with a strong background in child development, desire to mentor staff, and a passion for working with kids, teens and families in a public library setting. This is a 37.5 hours per week position, that includes an evening shift and weekend rotation. This is a salaried, exempt position that includes 95% employer paid health insurance, life insurance, IMRF retirement fund, optional 457 and flexible spending plans, annual paid time off (20 vacation days, 3 personal days, 12 sick days), and opportunities for career growth through continuing education opportunities, in-house committee work, conference attendance, and special event planning. Starting at $72,500 DOQ.

Qualified candidates will have:

  • An MLIS from an ALA-accredited institution
  • 3 years of experience working with youth in a library setting, including 1 year in a supervisory role
  • The ability to work a flexible schedule, including some nights and weekends
  • Spanish language skills a plus
