Teen Read Week: The Alex Awards

The Alex Awards are awarded to 10 books every year that are written for adults, but have a special appeal to high school readers.  This is one of my favorite literary awards, not only because there are a lot of winning books to choose from, but also because there’s such a wide variety of titles to choose from!  Whether you’re into graphic novels, biographies, contemporary fiction, mysteries, science fiction, or something in between, you’re guaranteed to find at least one book that sparks your interest!  In addition, the selection committee publishes a list of nominated titles every year – 30-40 titles that didn’t make the final cut, but still appeal to a wide range of readers.

Here are the 10 winning titles from 2016:

all-involved   between the world and me  bones and all   futuristic-violence-and-fancy-suits   girl-at-war   half-the-world   humans-of-new-york   sacred-heart   undocumented   the-unraveling-of-mercy-louis

You can visit the Alex Awards website to see past winners & nominated titles, which should be more than enough to make your reading list explode!  If you’re looking for a few suggestions, here are some of our favorite titles from the last five years.

the martian    mother-mother   Salvage the Bones   night-circus   ready-player-one   whered-you-go-bernadette   tell-the-wolves-im-home   help-for-the-haunted   soulless

Happy reading!
