Read Harder 2018: A Comic Not Published by Marvel, DC, or Image

This week’s Read Harder challenge asks readers to go beyond the familiar when it comes to comic books.  We’ve all heard of Wonder Woman, Spiderman, and the Hulk – but what about Axe Cop, or Goldie Vance?  There are so many amazing comics waiting to be discovered, and we’ve narrowed it down a little to start the search.  You can also check out an extended list – just find the Read Harder 2018 tab and click on “Comic Not Published by Marvel, DC, or Image”. As always, click on a cover or a title to place a hold.

Adulthood is a Myth by Sarah Anderson

“Adulthood is a myth confronts head-on the horrors, anxiety, and awkwardness of modern adult life. From the agony of holding hands with a gorgeous guy to the yawning pit of hell that is the wifi gone down to the eye-watering pain of eating too-hot pizza because one cannot stand to wait for it to cool down, Sarah fearlessly documents it all.”

Axe Cop by Ethan Nicolle

“Follows the adventures of Axe Cop as he teams up with the ever-changing Flute Cop, recruits new members to his team, fights supernatural villains throughout the universe, and answers e-mail questions from fans.”

Giant Days Vol 1 by John Allison

“Susan, Esther, and Daisy started at university three weeks ago and became fast friends. Now, away from home for the first time, all three want to reinvent themselves. But in the face of hand-wringing boys, “personal experimentation,” influenza, mystery-mold, nu-chauvinism, and the willful, unwanted intrusion of “academia,” they may be lucky just to make it to spring alive. Going off to university is always a time of change and growth, but for Esther, Susan, and Daisy, things are about to get a little weird.”

Goldie Vance by Hope Larson

“Sixteen-year-old Marigold “Goldie” Vance lives at a Florida resort with her dad, who manages the place. Her mom, who divorced her dad years ago, works as a live mermaid at a club downtown. Goldie has an insatiable curiosity, which explains her dream to one day become the hotel’s in-house detective. When Charles, the current detective, encounters a case he can’t crack, he agrees to mentor Goldie in exchange for her help solving the mystery.”

Steven Universe by Rebecca Sugar

“In all new adventures in the world of Cartoon Network s Steven Universe, Steven helps a baby songbird find its mother, takes part in a food truck competition, attends a Renaissance Faire, and visits possibly the scariest place of all, the Prom!”
