November 2016: Here’s what’s happening at WPL!

Join us this month for fun and educational events for people of all ages, including a special Science of “The Martian” for fans of the hit movie and bestselling book. Our college prep series continues with programs for students and parents. Children and young adults will celebrate International Games Day with fun card and tabletop games. Once again, the Library is proud to provide ACA enrollment or re-enrollment services. Avid readers are invited to join the Library’s book club. Please note that the Library will be closed on Friday, November 4, for staff training. The Library will also close early on Wednesday, November 23, and remain closed Thursday, November 24 and Friday, November 25, in observance of Thanksgiving. We will reopen on Saturday, November 26 with normal hours.

Special events in November 2016:

November 7: Art Attack: Colorama
Children in grades 3-5 will join the coloring craze at this fun program, on Monday, November 7, from 5:00 – 6:00pm in the Bradbury Room (lower level).

November 10-11: Friends of the Library Fall Book Sale
Join the Friends of the Waukegan Public Library for their fall book sale and support their work year-round!

November 15: Parent University: Help Your Child Be Successful
Parents of high school students will learn how to support and encourage their children’s learning and success at this workshop, on Tuesday, November 15, from 6:30 – 7:30pm in the Bradbury Room on the lower level.

November 16: International Games Day
Children and young adults will celebrate the 9th annual International Games Day with card and tabletop games, on Wednesday, November 16, from 5:00 – 6:00pm in the Children’s Department.

November 18: Health Fair
Community members will receive free health screenings, including vital signs/BMI, blood glucose, cholesterol, and more, on Friday, November 18, from 10:00 – 12:30pm in the main floor classroom A sponsored by Lewis Fresh Market.

November 19: The Science of “The Martian”
The Adler Planetarium’s Michelle Nichols will explore the science of the blockbuster film “The Martian” and look ahead to the technological advancements on the horizon for real future missions to Mars, on Saturday, November 19, from 2:00 – 3:00pm in the main floor classroom AB, sponsored by Lewis Fresh Market.

November 21: Sensational Sixes and Sevens: Food Fun
Children ages six and seven will create a variety of tasty treats using cookies, frosting, and fruit, on Monday, November 21, from 6:30 – 7:00pm in the Early Learning Center sponsored by North Shore Gas.

November 22: FAFSA Workshop
Young adults and their parents are invited to stop in for assistance with the FAFSA form, on Tuesday, November 22, from 5:30 – 7:30pm in the Computer Learning Center, main floor.

November 23: Preschool Learning Time: Little Builders
Preschool children will create structures with building toys, on Wednesday, November 23, from 11:30am – 12:00pm in the Early Learning Center sponsored by North Shore Gas.

November 28: Sensational Sixes and Sevens: Positively Play Dough
Children ages six and seven will use their imaginations while playing with play dough and pasta at this sensory activity, on Monday, November 28, from 6:30 – 7:00pm in the Early Learning Center sponsored by North Shore Gas.

November 29: Bound to Please Book Club
Adults are invited to join the Library’s book club, moderated by retired librarian Lourdes Mordini, on Tuesday, November 29, from 2:00 – 3:30pm in the Bradbury Room on the lower level. Information on the year’s selections can be found on the library’s website, waukeganpl.org.

November 30: Preschool Learning Time: Tasty Treats
Preschool children will create delicious treats with cookies, fruit, caramel, and frosting, on Wednesday, November 30, from 11:30am – 12:00pm in the Early Learning Center sponsored by North Shore Gas.

November 30: Bilingual Family Storytime: Harvest
Families will hear a bilingual harvest story, make a harvest craft, and enjoy a healthy snack together on Wednesday, November 30, from 6:00 -7:00pm in the Bradbury Room on the lower level.

The time to enroll or re-enroll in a health insurance plan under the Affordable Care Act is now! Call WPL today to make your appointment with one of our certified navigators: (847) 775-2582. Assistance is available in English and Spanish.

Mondays-Thursdays, 5:30 – 7:30pm: Homework Help
Children in grades K-8 can receive assistance Mondays through Thursdays in the Homework Help Room in the Children’s Department. Young adults in grades 9 -12 can receive assistance Mondays through Thursdays in the Homework Room (main floor classroom B, sponsored by Lewis Fresh Market).

Tuesdays: Healthy Families with Mano a Mano
The Library partners with Mano a Mano Family Resource Center to provide assistance with Affordable Care Act, SNAP, Medicaid, and Child Support services, as well as response to jury duty letters and translation of documents, every Tuesday from 11:30am – 7:30pm, main floor study room 5.

Thursdays: YA Robotics
High school students in grades 9-12 will learn to build and program their own robots in this hands-on club, from 5:30 – 7:00pm in the main floor Classroom B sponsored by Lewis Fresh Market.
