We’re excited to announce our lineup of programs in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month! Highlights of the Library-wide series include a concert from the talented Mariachi Estrellas from Waukegan Public Schools, a culinary trip to Puerto Rico with our 6th-8th grade cooking club, a dance performance, and more. September 15 – October 15: Community members will have the opportunity to share about their Hispanic heritage through an interactive display at the Reference Desk. Stop in to learn more and tell us your story!
September 16-22: Hispanic/Latino Heritage Storytime Week
Children ages 3-5 and their parents will enjoy a variety of stories celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month on the following days during this special week: Tuesday & Thursday, 10:45 – 11:15am, and Saturday, 3:30 – 4:00pm.
September 16 – October 14: Hispanic Heritage Month Family Movie Series
Enjoy a movie and popcorn with the whole family as we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month! Family movies are held every Sunday, 1:30 – 3:30pm in the Bradbury Room, lower level. For a list of films, visit our calendar at waukeganpl.org/calendar.
September 17: Sensational Sixes and Sevens – Hispanic Heritage Games & Crafts
Children in kindergarten through second grade will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with games and crafts on Monday, September 17, 6:30 – 7:00pm in the Children’s Literacy Classroom, lower level.
September 19: Bilingual Family Storytime – Celebrating Hispanic Heritage
Families will learn about folkloric dance, listen to a story, create a craft and share a healthy snack together, on Wednesday, September 19, 6:00 – 7:00pm in the Bradbury Room, lower level.
September 20: Mariachi Estrellas Concert
Community members of all ages will enjoy music from Mariachi Estrellas as we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month on Thursday, September 20, 6:00 – 7:00pm in the Bradbury Room, lower level.
September 24: Get Cooking – Fiesta!
Children in grades 3-5 will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month with this hands-on cooking program, on Monday, September 24, 5:00 – 6:00pm in the Bradbury Room (lower level).
September 29: Grupo Folklorico Mexico en la Piel de Waukegan
Community members of all ages will enjoy a dance performance as part of our Hispanic Heritage Month celebrations on Saturday, September 29, 2:00 – 3:30pm in the Library’s courtyard.
October 2: Today’s Inspired Latinas – Erika Quezada
Adults will hear from Erika Quezada and share their own stories on Tuesday, October 2, 5:00 – 7:00pm in Classroom A on the main floor.
October 3, 6 & 13: Sugar Skulls Decoration Workshops
Families will learn about Mexican traditions celebrating the Day of the Dead and create their own sugar skulls to honor their ancestors, on Wednesday, October 3, 6:00 – 7:30pm, and Saturdays October 6 and October 13, 2:00 – 3:30pm in the Bradbury Room (lower level).
October 10: 6th-8th Grade Cooking Club – Taste of Puerto Rico
6th-8th graders will learn how to prepare favorite foods from Puerto Rico, on Wednesday, October 10, 5:30 – 7:00pm in the Bradbury Room (lower level).
October 16: Loteria Night
Families will have fun playing Mexico’s favorite game, Loteria, on Tuesday, October 16, 5:30 – 7:30pm in the Bradbury Room (lower level).
