Art Exhibit Grand Opening Reception

Work by local art students ages 10 to 18 will be on display in Waukegan Public Librarys Gallery 128 starting June 1. The exhibition titled Creative Light of Youth consists of original artwork by students of local instructor Dr. Marco Antonio Cruz. An opening reception for the artists will be held on June 1 at 2 p.m. and is open to the public.

Born in Puebla City, Mexico, Dr. Cruz became obsessed with both art and singing at an early age and spent most of his youth sketching and studying architecture, human figure and nature. He explored a broad range of artistic styles before earning his Doctorate degree in Fine Arts from Suffield University. Dr. Cruz has won many awards throughout the years, including first place in a contest by the Chicago Yellow Pages Spanish Edition in 2005, which put his painting on the front cover.

Now Dr. Cruz is a private art instructor for both children and adults and has also taught at the Waukegan Park District, Jack Benny Center for the Arts, and the Xilin Lake County Chinese School at the College of Lake County. Im extremely proud of my students because all of them started without any previous art knowledge, and now the community can see their growth and creativity in painting different subjects with different techniques, said Dr. Cruz.

This exhibit allows the students to show their talents, feelings, emotions and skills, said Cruz. It is an activity that calls for dedication, experimentation, and rewards them with a heightened appreciation of the world around them. This is just the beginning for them on their journeys to become professional artists. All of the students included in the exhibit have been taking classes with Dr. Cruz for about one year. The students included in the exhibit are: Daniela Santoyo, Jocelyn Montejo, Katarina Garcia, Juan Zuniga, Skylynn Medina, Zyanya Narvaez, Adriana Amador, Joselyn Duvon, and Andres Vences.

Pianist Jonathan Cruz will supply the background music for the reception. Cruz began studying music when he was 5 years old and has presented over 41 recitals over the years. He is graduating this year from Millikin University with a degree in commercial music and Spanish education.

Creative Light of Youth will be on display at the gallery through August 2. Gallery 128 serves as a dedicated exhibit space to showcase the talents of local artists in the library. To learn more about exhibit opportunities, call Rena Morrow at (847) 623-2041, ext. 231.

Have you ever wanted to go on an adventure like the characters in your favorite childrens books? On April 21 from 1 to 3 p.m., the Waukegan Public Library will host its annual El Dìa de los Niños/El Dìa de los Libros family festival featuring games and activities from classic children’s books including “Charlottes Web”, “The Giving Tree”, “The Cat in the Hat” and “Harry Potter”.

Library books will come alive as children of all ages make Wild Things monster masks for a bonfire dance, taste apples from the Giving Tree, balance a stack of household items with the Cat in the Hat, cast spells at Hogwarts, go on a pirate treasure hunt and meet well-known book characters. Every 15 minutes, families will be entertained with bilingual stories in the librarys Early Learning Center and then have a chance to explore the Farm Fun exhibit, milk a life-size fiberglass cow, and hold real baby chicks.

The library will also highlight mariachi culture from the bilingual childrens book Delicious Hullabaloo/Pachanga Deliciosa with a performance by a local mariachi group as a preview for that evenings performance of the Chicago Lyric Operas Cruzar la cara de la luna at 7:30 p.m. at the Genesee Theatre. Four tickets to the performance will be raffled off during the festival.

Each family will also take home a free bag of books while supplies last, courtesy of Bernies Book Bank. Partner organizations the Green Youth Farm, the United Way and Words on Wheels will also take part in the festivities. Complimentary refreshments will be served.

Tractors, chickens, and cows, oh my! Children of all ages will have fun on the farm at the Waukegan Public Librarys new Early Learning Center exhibit, Oink, Baa, Moo: Farm Fun, funded exclusively by North Shore Gas. The library will unveil the exhibit, featuring 2,200 square-feet of displays and interactive learning centers that include a barn slide, apple orchard, chicken coop, and life-sized milking cow, at a grand opening reception, Dec. 9, from 1 to 3 p.m. The event is open to the public, free of charge, and includes entertainment and refreshments.
