… Larry the Cable Guy in a pink tutu? Larry the Cable Guy plays Larry Guthrie, a bumbling but loveable guy who is trying to win his girl, Brooke, back from Beau, who’s running for mayor. In Tooth Fairy 2, Larry lets slip that there is no tooth fairy. Big mistake. The head of the tooth fairies, who looks like a kid, is actually 500 years old and hears of this grave misspoken mistake. In order for Larry to win Brooke back he has to be a tooth fairy, dressed in a pink tutu. Mean ol’ Beau steals new toys from Brooke’s after-school day care to make Larry look bad. You’ll crack up at all of the situations that Larry gets into. You’ll meet Crusher the pig who helps Larry along. Will Larry collect all of the teeth he needs to git-r-done and win Brooke back?

This is a DVD for the entire family. You won’t have to explain to little kids what’s real or isn’t. It’s magic! In the special extras at the end the Tooth Fairy/Larry explains why you lose baby teeth, which is pretty cute also.

In Cherries in Winter: My Family’s Recipe for Hope in Hard Times, Suzan Colón writes with candor of her family history in hard times and includes a few wonderful, old fashioned, stick-to-your-ribs recipes. This book is a history of sorts on how her family survived the Depression, with a ‘make do, can do, and we’ll survive attitude’ that is relevant today. This book is not so much of what has happened in the past, but of how Suzan copes with the present day economy and the loss of her job through reading her grandmother’s cookbook and journal.

If you remember the hard times of the Depression, the 2000/2001 recession, or are just going through a rough patch financially, this extraordinary book is for you. Told with laughter and a few tears, this short read is wonderfully in tune with today. One of the highlights in the book is about mashed potatoes – how they were made way back when and how Suzan makes them now is a hoot. If you miss the humor in it, you need to go back and start at the beginning of the chapter. This book makes you feel like you can do anything you really set you mind to. I loved it!

… Clint Eastwood turning into a chameleon? That’s the idea behind Rango — a very hip and totally unique DVD. Rango blows into the town of Dirt and takes on the Eastwood persona. Think The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, music and all, only with the residents of the desert turned into cartoon characters in place of people.

No, Clint Eastwood isn’t in the movie, exactly – just listen and watch. Also, be sure to watch the special features to see how this movie came about. Kids will like the cartoon aspect and adults will get a kick out of the western satire.

Have You Heard About... Megamind

… the mega-villain who’s trying to take over Metro City? Megamind is one of the best animated films I’ve seen in a long time. A reluctant super hero, a “mega-villain” and his pet fish, a cute girl reporter, and a nerd make the messages of “evil vs. good” and “yes, you can change and be someone special” into an extremely moving and very funny movie.

If animation and a good story line aren’t enough for you, just sit back and enjoy the fantastic songs of George Thorogood, AC/DC, Michael Jackson, Ozzy Osborne and Guns N’ Roses. Be sure to watch the DVD to the end of the first round of credits or you’ll miss the very end of the movie! The “mega” features are also a must watch.

Have You Heard About... How to Train Your Dragon

… the Viking called Hiccup? In the DVD of How to Train Your Dragon, you’ll see him go from a scrawny Viking in training to the greatest dragon slayer in the history of Vikingdom. Hiccup needs to prove to his Dad, and the others of his tribe, that he is worthy of becoming a Viking. With his quirky new pal Toothless – a small, sort of greedy and somewhat rude dragon – these two learn to understand each other and eventually earn the respect of everyone.

This movie has adventure, animal-human communications, heroism and is at times both funny and sad.

Watching the special features gives you an understanding of the characters and how long it actually took to make this movie. Did you know that every dragon has its own unique fire breathing capabilities?

This is a great PG-rated movie for the entire family.

If you like the movie, be sure to check out the further adventures of Hiccup Horrendous Haddock 3 in the books by Cressida Cowell.
