Waukegan Public Library services

Tools for Teachers

Please click on the plus sign [+] to open each teacher tool and the minus sign [-] to close each teacher tool.

[-] Library Cards for Teachers

Waukegan Library Cards are easy to obtain. Just show a photo ID and a proof of Waukegan residence. If you have a card from another library in Illinois, show ID and your library card, and you can register as a reciprocal borrower to check out items for your classroom. You may also register your Wisconsin card for borrowing privileges for the school year by coming to the library with your home library card and school ID.

[-] Library Cards for Students

A library card is available to any Waukegan resident. Children below the 9th grade or under age 14 need a parent or legal guardian to register them for a library card. When applying for a card, the student or parent will need: a photo ID, such as a driver's license, a state ID, or passport and proof of residency in Waukegan, such as a current bill, mail, or lease with your name and address on it.

Library card applications are available for students at both the library and bookmobile. Students may get a free library card if they have never had a library card before and they live in the Waukegan Public Library tax district. If their card has been lost, a $2 replacement fee is applicable.

[-] E-cards

If you are a Waukegan teacher but do not have a card and need to use our online resources from outside the library, you may obtain an e-card. To get an e-card before you make the trip to the library, just fill out the e-card application form, and you will receive your e-card number by email within 48 hours.

[-] Online Databases

Over 17 of our databases can be accessed from any computer with Internet access 24/7. Click here to go to these great resources made available free to you through the library for research or homework. Use them from home with a Waukegan Public Library card or e-card.

[-] Ask Away

Click here to Ask Away, a live, online help service offered by Illinois libraries! Here, you may "chat" with an experienced reference librarian regarding your information needs.

[-] Assignment Alerts

Teachers may wish to take advantage of Waukegan Public Library's Assignment Alert service in order to make materials more accessible to students. When materials in a research area are limited, items may be placed on reserve for use only in the Children's Department. Please encourage your students to bring their assignment with them when they come to the library. This helps us to better assist the student with their homework needs.

Submit Assignment Alerts online, or print the form and submit by fax 847-623-2094 or by phone 847-623-2041, ext. 280 to the Children's Department (preschool-8th grade), by fax 847-623-2092 or by phone 847-623-2041, ext. 237 to the Adult Department (9th grade and higher.) or by mail to:

Waukegan Public Library Assignment Alerts
128 N. County St.
Waukegan, IL 60085

Please add to your fax or mail "Attention: Children's Department" if you teach grades up to 8th, or "Attention: Adult Department" if you teach 9th grade or higher.

[-] Specific title requests

If you would like to request specific titles to check out, you can request up to five titles over the phone at 847-623-2041, Children's Department ext. 283, Adult Department ext. 237. If you have more than 5 requests, please fax us at 847-623-2094 (Children's Department) or 847-623-2092 (Adult Department), or stop by the library. The standard loan period for Waukegan Public Library books is 3 weeks with 1 renewal. Interlibrary loan books will be due when the loaning library indicates.

[-] Book Loans for Classrooms grades 1-8

With three days notice, a librarian can select a group of books for use within your classroom. Choose a special topic or request a general selection for good reading. If you are a classroom teacher in District 60 or at a private school in Waukegan, classroom book loans may be checked out on your library card for a six week period with no renewals needed! If you do not teach in District 60 or Waukegan private schools you may have the same loan for a three week renewable period. The number of books selected for a loan may be determined by availability. Seasonal requests and collection size may limit the number of books available for some topics.

[-] Kindergarten Book Crates

Kindergarten classes may have a crate of 30 books in their classrooms that will be updated monthly. This is a great way to expand the imaginative world for your students to explore in your classroom.

[-] School Bookmobile Service
