Please ask a librarian if you have any questions.
Preschool Books
Books with green stripes
on the spine are for preschoolers. They are in alphabetical order by the
author's last name.
Board Books
Our board books are shelved in our Rocket next to the
preschool books. You will find a wide selection of board books for your
toddlers.
Readers
All of the readers except the ones with white and pink
stripes are shelved together, along with the picture books. They are in
alphabetical order by the author's last name. The white and pink striped
readers are located at the beginning of the preschool/picture book collection.
Books with white stripes are beginning readers. White-striped readers
are not in alphabetical order.
Books with pink stripes on the spine are
appropriate for kids reading on a late first grade to early second grade
level.
Books with orange stripes are appropriate for
kids reading on a late second grade to early third grade level.
Books with yellow
stripes are appropriate for kids reading on a third grade to early fourth
grade level.
Picture Books
Books with blue stripes are
picture books. Many kids in second, third, and fourth grade can read these
books. These are also good books to read aloud to kids in kindergarten
and up.
Magazines
The Children's Department carries a number of magazines,
including Ranger Rick, Highlights, Boys' Life, and Teen. Magazines are
shelved on the far wall by the fish tank. Teen magazines are located by
the teen collection.
Fiction Books
Fiction books are in alphabetical order by the author's
last name. These books are located behind nonfiction. Books in this area
that are marked with red stripes are for readers
at the late third grade and fourth grade levels. The rest of the fiction
books are not marked and range from fifth to eighth grade reading levels.
These books also have subject stickers such as Mystery, Fantasy, and Science
Fiction to help you select the type of book you're interested in.
Paperbacks
Paperbacks are at the same reading level as our fiction
books. Most of them are in alphabetical order by the author's last name.
However, some series, such as the Baby-sitters' Club and Animorphs, are
shelved by the series title. Please ask a librarian to help locate books
in this area if you are having problems.
Rebecca Caudill Books
During the school year, the Rebecca Caudill books are
located on the far wall next to the fish tank.
Teen Fiction
Books which are at the teen reading level are divided
between the Youth and Adult collections. Books for younger teens (up to
seventh or eighth grade) are shelved in the Children's Department next
to paperbacks.
Nonfiction Books
Nonfiction books are arranged in Dewey Decimal classification.
Individual Biographies are at the end of the nonfiction section. See the
catalog or a librarian if you need help.
Reference Books
Reference books are marked with yellow
labels that have REFERENCE printed on them over
the call number label. These books cannot be checked out. Reference books
are shelved on stacks in front of non-fiction.
AV Materials
The Children's Department has a variety of Audio/Visual
materials. The collection includes audio cassettes with and without read-along
books, videos, DVDs, CD-ROMs, Books on Tape, and music. The videos, DVDs,
music, and audio cassettes and CD-ROM's are behind the reference collection.
Books on Tape are in the front of the department near the windows and
are also located by the music, videos and DVDs.

some to be checked out. They are located at the front of the department

The Spanish books are shelved before the nonfiction books.
Parent/Teacher Collection
Books for parents and teachers are shelved in the Parent/Teacher
Collection. They have labels with "Parent/Teacher" in green
over the call number labels. Books on raising children, designing lesson
plans, craft projects, and home schooling are in this section. The Parent/Teacher
Collection also has books for younger kids on sensitive issues, such as
divorce, adoption, death, and hospitalization, so that adults can use
these books to help kids deal with these issues.

We have pieces and a board to play chess or checkers
against all your friends or parents.
