Awards - 2013
The Waukegan Public Library is a National Medal for Museum and Library Service winner. Presented by the Institute of Museum and Library Servies, the National Medal is the nation’s highest honor conferred on museums and libraries for service to the community and celebrates institutions that make a difference for individuals, families, and communities. Only five libraries and five museums in the nation receive this honor each year.

The Waukegan Public Library was awarded the Upstart Innovation Award by the Public Library Association for the library’s “Bus to Us” field-trip program, which brings thousands of elementary school children to the library throughout the year for engaging, curriculum-guided visits. This award recognizes a public library’s innovative and creative service program to the community.
Awards - 2012

The Waukegan Public Library received the American Library Association Marshall Cavendish Excellence in Library Programming Award for the creation of an Early Learning Center (ELC) to meet the demands of a community affected by changing demographics and a lack of resources, especially for children ages 0-7.

The Waukegan Public Library is the recipient of 5 First Place Awards in the 2011 ILA Excellence in Marketing & Public Relations Competition: Most Creative Visual or Interactive Display, Most Creative Video, Best Singular Direct Mail or Promotional Piece, Newsletter Series, and Most Original Event/Festival.

The Waukegan Public Library Early Learning Center is the recipient of the 2011 Illinois Library Association Highsmith Library Innovative Award. This award recognizes a library’s achievement in planning and implementing an innovative or creative program or service which has had a measurable impact on its users. The award is sponsored by Highsmith, Inc.
The Waukegan Public Library Literacy Suite is the 2011 recipient of the Illinois Library Association’s Hugh C. Atkinson Memorial/DEMCO Award. The award recognizes an individual, a group, a program, or an institution for a sustained activity and contribution having a lasting impact on librarianship. The award is sponsored by DEMCO.

The Illinois Library Association (ILA) awarded this year’s Highsmith Library Innovation Award to the Ray Bradbury Storytelling Festival, sponsored annually by the Waukegan Public Library. School and public libraries across Illinois compete for the award, designed to recognize a library’s achievement in planning and implementing an innovative program or service which has a measurable impact on its users.

The American Dream Starts @ your library® - $15,000
Awarded by the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, the American Library Association (ALA) and its Office for Literacy and Outreach Services (OLOS), the Waukegan Public Library’s Promotoras program joins a cohort of 100 previously funded programs in Dollar General communities. The award-winning American Dream libraries built easily replicable programs, developed coalition-building strategies and provided annotated lists of proven resources for libraries across the country serving adult English language learners.
Lake County Farm Bureau Ag in the Classroom - $250
The Lake County Farm Bureau Ag In the Classroom Program awards K-12 teachers across the county with funds for projects promoting agricultural literacy in the classroom.

Adult Volunteer Literacy - $62,000
This grant provides funding for the library’s adult volunteer literacy program to help adults who read below the ninth grade level or speak English at a beginning level. Trained, volunteer adult literacy tutors provide instructional tutoring sessions to help adults improve their basic reading, math, writing skills or English language proficiency.
The grant provides instructional materials and staff to assess the needs of adult learners and training for volunteer tutors. Waukegan Public Library partners with the College of Lake County and Literacy Volunteers of Lake County to provide a variety of opportunities for adults to improve their basic skills.
Funding for this grant was awarded by the Illinois State Library (ISL), a Department of the Office of Secretary of State, using funds provided by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), under the federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA).
ESL Family Literacy - $31,750
This grant provides two 16-week semesters of classroom instruction to improve the English language proficiency of parents and their children ages 0-6 years. The children learn through stories, music and activities, while their parents are in the classroom next door. The program includes library time as well as weekly story time and educational projects for the parents and children together. Waukegan Public Library works in partnership with the College of Lake County and Literacy Volunteers of Lake County to provide the ESL Family Literacy class.
Funding for this grant was awarded by the Illinois State Library (ISL), a Department of the Office of Secretary of State, using funds provided by the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), under the federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA).

This grant provides two 16-week semesters of classroom instruction to improve the basic skill levels in reading, writing and math for parents and their children ages 0-6 years. The children develop early literacy skills to prepare them for kindergarten through stories, music and activities. Library time is part of the program as well as weekly story time and educational projects for the parents and children together. Waukegan Public Library works in partnership with the College of Lake County and Literacy Volunteers of Lake County to provide the ABE Family Literacy class.

Eliminate the Digital Divide - $30,185
The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity awarded the library’s Digital Divide Program a grant for $32,736. The Digital Divide program offers under-served communities access to computers and technology training. The library will use these funds to supply our community with free computer classes in Spanish and English.
The Church of the Holy Spirit - $10,000
The Church of the Holy Spirit, located in Lake Forest, Illinois, awarded the Library’s “Promotoras Ambassador Program” $10,000 because of its positive impact on the Waukegan community. The program uses a team of ambassadors to reach out to the underserved Latino residents, and through the use of library services, assist their integration into the community.
Harold M. and Adeline S. Morrison Family Foundation - $5,000
The Harold M. and Adeline S. Morrison Family Foundation awarded the Library a grant of $5,000 to support the “Oink, Baa, Moo: Farm Fun” Early Learning Center exhibit in the children’s department of the Library. The funds will be used for program development and implemetation to enhance the exhibit experience for Library visitors and the community, including curriculum development for the Library’s Bus to Us Program.
Loleta D. Fyan - $5,000
The Waukegan Public Library has been awarded the 2012 Loleta D. Fyan Grant for the program entitled “Promotoras Ambassador Program.” The program will establish a team of ambassadors to reach out to the underserved Latino residents and through the use of library services assist their integration into the community.
This grant, given annually on a competitive basis, is named after an ALA past-president (1951-52) who provided funds for the American Library Association (ALA) in her will. The grant supports a project that will develop and/or improve public library services, will effect changes that are innovative and responsive to the future and have potential for broader impact and application beyond a specific local need.

Target Corporation awarded an Early Childhood Reading Grant to the Families that Read Together, Grow Together Program. The grant will be used to purchase a variety of quality English and Spanish read-aloud books for use by story time presenters who will model for parents good read-aloud techniques during Family Reading Time.
Lois Morrison and Justin Daab - $1,000
The Library received a contribution of $1,000 to support the hatching of live chicks in the “Oink, Baa, Moo: Farm Fun” Early Learning Center exhibit in the children’s department of the Library. The funds will be used for purchasing fertilized eggs, food, and supplies for the baby chicks.
Leave No Child Inside - $500

Chicago Wilderness is a regional alliance that connects people and nature. They have more than 260 organizations working together to restore local nature and improve the quality of life for all, by protecting the lands and waters on which we all depend. The Leave No Child Inside Project hopes to connect children with nature, so they become more inventive and better problem-solvers due to the hands-on learning that local nature provides. The $500 grant award will be used to expand the Library’s “Digging in the Dirt” family gardening program and to purchase a rototiller for the garden.

Live & Learn Construction - $38,739
Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White and the Illinois State Library has awarded the Waukegan Public Library a FY2011 Live & Learn Construction Grant for $38,739. One of 16 Illinois libraries to receive the 2011 state grants, the Waukegan Public Library will use the funds to help pay for a new energy-efficient hybrid boiler, replacing their 46 year old boiler!

Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity - $20,000
The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity awarded the Waukegan Public Library a $20,000 grant. These funds will be used to replace the library’s 46 year old boiler with a new energy-efficient hybrid boiler, saving the library 15-20% in utility costs. These are savings that will be passed on to the taxpayer!
Legacy of Literacy (Matching) - $10,000
A private foundation awarded a $10,000 Challenge Grant to the library’s Legacy of Literacy campaign. The library launched Legacy of Literacy this year to help fund the building of its new 3,200 square-foot Literacy Suite, which offers free one-on-one tutoring, Adult Basic Education and ESL classes, family literacy, and computer classes in Spanish and English. The foundation matched any new or increased Legacy of Literacy donations dollar-for-dollar up to $2,500 per donor, up to a total of $10,000.
Harold M. and Adeline S. Morrison Family Foundation - $9,000
The Harold M. and Adeline S. Morrison Family Foundation awarded the Library a grant of $5,000 to support the “Creepy Crawlies” Early Learning Center exhibit in the children’s department of the Library. The funds will be used for program development and implemetation to enhance the exhibit experience for Library visitors and the community, including curriculum development for the Library’s Bus to Us Program.
Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation - $9,546
The Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation awarded the Waukegan Public Library a grant in the amount of $9,546 for installation of energy efficient HVAC equipment.
Public Sector Electric Efficiency (PSEE) Program - $7,147
The Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity awarded the Waukegan Public Library a $7,147 rebate on the installation of energy efficient lighting. The PSEE provides incentives for projects that increase the electrical energy efficiency of local governments, public school districts, and community college districts located in the Illinois electric service territories of Ameren Illinois Utilities.
Community Engagement - $2,000
Target Corporation awarded a Community Engagement Grant to the Los Bilinguitos Program. The grant will be used to purchase a variety of quality English and Spanish read-aloud books to use during the weekly Bilingual Reading and Spanish Vocabulary Development Time.

The Lake County Community Foundation awarded the library a $1,000 grant in pursuing projects to advance a unified system of human services delivery that will effectively meet the needs of the county’s most vulnerable residents.

Harold M. and Adeline S. Morrison Family Foundation - $7,000
The Harold M. and Adeline S. Morrison Family Foundation awarded the Library a grant of $5,000 to support the Lake Michigan portion of the “Under the Sea” Early Learning Center exhibit in the children’s department of the Library. The funds will be used for program development and implemetation to enhance the exhibit experience for Library visitors and the community, including curriculum development for the Library’s Bus to Us Program.
Early Childhood Reading -$2,000
Target Corporation awarded an Early Childhood Reading Grant to the Families Learning Together program, administered by the College of Lake County, Literacy Volunteers of Lake County and the Waukegan Public Library. Families Learning Together offers free family literacy classes at six sites throughout Lake County. The grant will help fund the program during the 2011 fiscal year.
